‘Not So Fast’ For the Co-ed Bathroom Bill

Sacramento, CA–Pacific Justice Institute vowed today to continue the fight against co-ed bathrooms in public schools. This comes after election officials announced today that the signatures needed for the referendum against the Co-Ed Bathroom Bill, AB 1266, fell short.

“Make no mistake, Pacific Justice Institute is committed to protecting the privacy of children. We are ready to review and challenge every signature that was not counted towards the referendum of this impudent and in-your-face bill,” said Brad Dacus, President of PJI. “Our children’s privacy is worth doing all that we can.”

Although the Secretary of State declared only 487,484 signatures valid—17,276 short of the required 504,760—that number doesn’t account for signatures that may have been wrongly thrown out. Historically, courts have set a much friendlier standard for validity than what many counties require. PJI, a member of the Privacy for All Students coalition, has a right to review and appeal each one of the roughly 131,000 signatures which were rejected.

In addition to the appealed signatures, PJI stands ready to defend any child who has their privacy rights violated because of this law.

The Co-ed Bathroom Bill, California AB 1266, was signed into law in 2013 and allows for children in K-12 grades to use bathrooms, locker rooms, and other facilities—in addition to playing on sports teams—of the gender they identify with and not their biological sex.

Pacific Justice Institute is a non-profit legal organization dedicated to defending religious, parental, and other constitutional rights.
