Co-ed Bathroom Bill Begins The Flush Towards Removal

pacific justice institute Press release about Bathroom Bill

Sacramento, CA–In another successful development, the Co-ed Bathroom Bill referendum is now one step closer to letting the voters of California decide if they want boys in the girls’ bathrooms, locker rooms, showers, and on their sports teams. The random sampling of signatures reached the needed 95% threshold for validity and will now go to a full count.

“We at Pacific Justice Institute are pleased to see that the voices of the people of California are being heard loud and clear,” said Brad Dacus, President of PJI. “This law was never about the children. Legislators listened to special interest groups to come up with a law that was both unbelievable and devastating for the privacy of all children,” Dacus continued.

The full count of the signatures is expected to be finalized by early March. If the required amount of signatures—roughly 500,000—are verified, the referendum then heads to the ballot in November for Californians to vote on the law.  For the time being, the law is suspended.

The Co-ed Bathroom Bill, California AB 1266, was signed into law in 2013 and would allow for children in K-12 grades to use bathrooms, locker rooms, and other facilities—in addition to playing on sports teams—of the gender they identify with and not their biological sex. PJI has fought this law from the beginning and is a member of the coalition established to repeal the law, Privacy for All Students.
